GRANT APPLICATION
CITY OF NEWCASTLE NSW We helped turn the City of Newcastle's vision of revitalising the coastal paths and walkways into reality. Bathers Way is a six kilometre coastal walk connecting five main beach areas from Merewether Ocean Baths to the south to Nobbys Beach to the north. Upgrading the Bathers Way is the community priority for revitalisation of the Newcastle coastline (Newcastle Coastal Revitalisation Strategy Masterplan). Section51 used imagination and creativity to turn a ‘coastal walkway’ into ‘mining infrastructure’ in drafting the application for funding under the NSW Government Resource for Regions Grant Program. We wrote the application specifically for the assessors and decision makers inside the NSW Government and presented a highly visual and technically complete proposal. The result was the City of Newcastle successfully obtained $5.9 million in a way they didn’t think possible. The benefit is that Councils, and the community’s, vision for the coastal paths and walkways will now be achieved in a significantly shorter timeframe. |
EFFICIENT PROJECT DELIVERY
ADELAIDE CITY COUNCIL SA We helped prepare the paperwork throughout the delivery process for the $2.5million Adelaide Aquatic Centre Energy Efficiency Upgrade. We provided efficiencies throughout the delivery process for the jointly funded Commonwealth and Adelaide City Council project, so the council team was able to get on with project management and deliver an exceptionally complex project in a fully functioning aquatic centre with minimal public disruption. The paperwork was challenging as Council determined that proceeding with the Co-Generation plant, a major component of the approved Commonwealth Community Energy Efficiency Program Funding, was not economically feasible due to unexpectedly high tender prices and a changing energy market, particular gas prices. Although Council substituted greater efficiencies with a BMS system and a substantially improved boiler system, this required a new funding agreement, project plan and milestones. Section51, based in Canberra, was able to successfully negotiate face to face with the Department a new funding agreement acceptable to both the Commonwealth and Council. The cost and time savings to council were substantial as we were on site in Canberra, and knew who to speak to and what to say. The result was that Adelaide City Council was successful in retaining the funding and were able to proceed in implementing a project that was economically feasible in a difficult energy market. The benefit is for the children and residents of Adelaide who now have one of the most energy efficient, comfortable and fun Aquatic Centres they could hope for. |

WORKSHOP DEMYSTIFYING GRANTS
TASMANIA
The Grants and Funding Workshop, provided by Section51, takes Councils to a new level in accessing, and delivering, grant funding. In late 2012 Section51 ran a workshop series across Tasmania. The story of the benefit and gain from this workshop series is best told in the words of two of the project officers of the many councils that attended.

Sorell Council
I first attended Section 51’s Commonwealth Grants and funding course in 2011. Prior to this Sorell Council had been quite successful in applying for local and state grants, however federal funding had always seemed to elude us. Section 51’s course helped us to identify the Commonwealth policy behind the grant. We now ensure that the policy behind the grant is at the forethought of our minds as we write our grants, which has completely changed our writing style. This has resulted in a significant improvement in our success for federal grants, including $1.2 million for RDAF Round two. The Commonwealth Grants and Funding Course also helps to identify current and potential grants opportunities, and for this reason I attended the course again in 2012. I would highly recommend this course to any Council looking to improve their success rate for federal funding. Gina Fenney Commercial Analyst Sorell Council Tasmania |
Kentish Council
I attended a grant workshop you conducted at the University of Tasmania campus in Burnie, Tasmania, early last December. I just write to let you know that the federal govt today announced we had won a $500,000 grant from the Regional Development Australia Fund for a community arts & recreation centre in Port Sorell. ... and we have you to thank for it. That was the first grant application I had ever written. So the application was entirely based on your grant-writing expertise. Now the Port Sorell community will have a community centre that will revolutionise living in that growing town. And they will have you to thank for it, even though they will never know that. So thanks very much for the valuable and inspiring information you provided that day. It made a profound difference.
